Jane Shields
Director/Head of Institute/CEO
Living Water Ecosystems Ltd.
MPhil Marine Biology & Toxicology
Biography
Jane Shields is the founder and co-director of Living Water Ecosystems Ltd (trading as Living Water since 1989).
Living Water has been designing ecological systems for a diversity of clients and the treatment of a wide range of effluent streams and the bioremediation of solid wastes and sludges for 36 years and we have extensive experience in the field. Living Water designs ecological waste and wastewater treatment and recycling systems based on natural processes. Jane has developed techniques for attenuating and treating contaminated surface water and effluent and wastes with a high organic loading, for example from distilleries, breweries, vineyards and farms and effluent streams with strong and complex chemical compounds arising from industry (e.g., soil terminals, highways, landfills and factories). She has also developed bioremediation and composting processes that transform highly concentrated hydrocarbon waste, sludges and contaminated soil into a compost product meeting the PAS 100 and agricultural grade A standards. She is experienced in ecological mitigation and in the improvement of habitats and increasing biodiversity.
Jane is involved in all aspects of Living Water's services from initial client contact, technical assessments, integrated strategies catchment and watershed management, design, construction, planting through to commissioning, ecological mitigation, habitat creation and landscaping. Jane’s role includes the development of technical and ecological solutions and products, project management, liaison with the client and their design team and regulatory bodies. She is the lead in the research and product development and shares responsibility for the financial and operations of Living Water.
