Biography
I am a postdoctoral researcher and research coordinator at the Environmental Research Institute - University of the Highlands and Islands, with a PhD, MSc (with distinction), and BSc (Hons) in environmental science and analytical chemistry. My PhD (2016-20) investigated pharmaceutical introduction and fate in wastewaters and surface waters with the ERI-UHI and James Hutton Institute, and funded by the Scottish Government's Hydro Nation Scholars Programme. After completing my PhD (2020), I worked with the Scottish One Health Breakthrough Partnership to develop research activity assessing pharmaceutical pollution and sustainable healthcare practices with cross-sector agencies including NHS Highland, Scottish Water, CREW, and SEPA. I am currently working on a UKRI Medical Research Council funded project (2022-present) with NHS Highland and University of Nottingham to co-create an eco-directed prescription formulary framework, with national and international partners.
My research interest include: emerging contaminants and pharmaceuticals, One Health, wastewater treatment, environmental pollution and monitoring, sustainable healthcare. I have 8+ yrs experience with analytical methods for water quality assessment and emerging contaminants analysis, including: grab and passive sampling; sample extraction and preparation; maintenance and operation of analytical instruments (particularly liquid chromatography – tandem mass spectrometers, high resolution mass spectrometers); statistical analysis and data processing with R software.
I actively collaborate with cross-sector stakeholders in the water, environment and healthcare sectors - and have developed strong networks in Scotland, with a desire to build UK-wide and international networks in similar One Health and environmental science fields.
